NEWS UPDATE 14.8.8Hi all,

Rain, rain go away, come back another month!!! As a result, the chances of Buddy running at Newton Abbot on Tuesday look very slim. Unless we have a heat wave for the next two days, he will not run.

I spoke to the boss...no not Veronica, Seamus this morning. Buddy is very well and ready to run. In view of the above, we will be looking for the next appropriate race for him. I will keep you informed of possible races after looking at big John's fixture list.

Hampton Court is enjoying his holiday in the water meadow. Seamus visits him every evening and says that he has only just started to climatise to this new environment and chill out. He is also starting to fill out a little and the good thing about this wet weather is it reduces the number of flies pestering him. Initially his poor skin took a hammering from the blighters!  All I can say HC is, "make the best of it, mate, as all will change in the future"!!

This rest will do him a tremendous amount of good and we will not be rushing to bring him back. No time scale has been decided yet, but we could do with some dry and warm weather for both horses. The sun on their backs will do them both good!

NEWS UPDATE 4.8.08.... FROM WILSFORD STABLES

Hi All,

Horse racing is a frustrating sport! On the way to Worcester I was praying for no more rain and in that respect my wishes were met. No rain since last night according to the groundsman (the heavens did open not more than 5 mins after the race) However, God giveth with one hand and taketh away with the other!!!!

Buddy's mistake at the third fence was a real bummer! The poor old jockey had no chance of staying on board! I have had a look at the race a number of times and I'm not sure whether Buddy has lost a bit of confidence or they were just going too fast for him. Either way another disappointing day!

The good news is that horse and jockey arrived home safely to fight another day! Buddy didn't really have a race, although he did manage to race back to the stables, and as a result he was schooled over hurdles first thing this morning. This was just to try and get him to concentrate more and give him a bit more confidence. According to the boss he started a bit hesitantly but warmed to the task very well by the end.

He has been entered at Newton Abbot on Monday, but unless the field reduces to a handful, he will not run. There is a better race for him at the same venue on 12th August which is a 0-85 handicap chase over 2m 1f.

I will keep you informed of developments.

NEWS UPDATE 22 JULY 2008

Hi Guys,

I dropped into the stable today to see our two boys whilst visiting clients nearby. Both are very well.

HC is now enjoying his summer holiday with his new companion, Persian Wish down in the water meadow at the far end of the stable. He has been down there for a week now and although initially he was a little fretful, he has settled down and enjoying the freedom!

I have attached the full details of his breeding from the catalogue. You will see there is a lot of stamina in the dam side!

Buddy is being geared towards his race at Worcester next week . It is an evening meeting, albeit he is in the first race, I think is around 5.40pm.  Lets hope the weather remains relatively dry  for the next week and Worcester do not over water again! I have attached a few photographs of Buddy when he won there last!

NEWS UPDATE 15.7.8

Hi all,
Just to say that Buddy has not been declared at Worcester. The ground is good/firm up the back straight but good/soft up the stand side. As the start is on the stand side and a good start is important, conditions will not suit!
Although Southwell is some distance, Seamus feels that Buddy has a good chance there and will run bar rain, so may be worth the journey, especially as the trainers horses are in form!!!
Please could members let me know who would like badges by Thursday lunchtime.Tight reins, Ray.

NEWS UPDATE 14.7.8

Hi all, We had a good turnout at the Stable yesterday to see Hampton Court and, of course, not forgetting Buddy.

I think everyone was pleasantly surprised by the look of our new acquisition, regal by name and regal by nature!! He is a fantastic looker and hopefully will have the ability to match! I know Lynne was certainly taken by the big lad.... All I can say Kevin, no wonder you always have a smile on your face, by the way she was stroking HC. Right-click here to download pictures. To help protect your privacy, Outlook prevented automatic download of this picture from the Internet.

It has been decided by members to put HC out to grass for the next 6-8 weeks.  According to Seamus it is apparent that he has not seen a blade of grass for all his training life and now needs a bit of relaxation before going back into training. As with a lot of flat horses he is a bit buzzy and needs to learn to chill.

Seamus gave an excellent summary of his form and relayed back comments from his previous trainer. According to Mark Johnston, he is a 1m 6f to 2m horse on the flat and he is in no doubt that he would have already won a couple of handicaps for him if he hadn't gone back to Darley Stud! Seamus did ask him why he didn't buy him back and MJ said because he was pulled away earlier in the year, he had lost touch with him and there were a number of other horses he currently trained in the sale he wanted to buy; lucky for us! HC will come back into training at the end of Aug/Sept and then aimed at juvenile hurdles as soon as Seamus thinks he is ready. Fingers cross all goes well and we can have some great fun with our new boy! Thanks everyone for your support!

NEWS UPDATE 10.7.8

With all this rain it looks doubtful whether Buddy will run at Stratford on Sunday, However,in case the sun shines continuously from now onwards and the ground dries up, would members let me know if they would like badges by tomorrow lunch time.

If Buddy doesn't run on Sunday, maybe members would instead like to see him and our new acquisition, Hampton Court at the stables on Sunday Morning. If interested, we will be meeting at the stable at 9.15am. Veronica has mentioned that she will provide hot bacon baps for all those attending!!!!

I will keep you informed of developments.

NEWS FROM NEWMARKET SALES

Just to let you know that FIRG are new owners of a 3YO gelding called Hampton Court! The breeding and details etc are as follows:

HAMPTON COURT    3-y-o (18 Apr 2005) ch g
Trainer: M Johnston             Owner: Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Maktoum
Breeder: Mount Coote Stud And M Johnston
King's Best(USA) (8.5f) - Rafting(IRE) (Darshaan(11.7f))
(100,000gns) 3rd foal, half-brother to Colorado Rapid, dual 1m winner at 3, and Ruffian Reef, 10f winner at 3 in Germany; dam multiple 12f winner at 3-4, half-sister to Lear White, smart prolific winner at 1m, out of smart French filly White Water

As you can see it was purchased as a yearling for £100,000 and accordingly has excellent breeding. You will remember that I mentioned that Seamus is not too keen on buying anything from Mark Johnstone.  However, after being very taken with the horses make up and confirmation (built like a NH horse), he spoke to the trainer who told him that he was disappointed that the horse was taken back by Darley Stud as he felt he would be a 85-90 rated horse this year. Apparently he went back because as a gelding, he could be used as a lead horse for their top class two year olds. M J thinks he will do a good job for us!

The purchase price was £9k and with extra's etc, will cost in total around £10k. Seamus is extremely excited and cant wait to get the horse into training. The next decision is to decide what are we going to do with the horse until we decide when to put him into training??

I hope all those who said they would contribute to the purchase price are happy with the acquisition. Your comments and contributions would be gratefully received.

NEWS UPDATE 27.6.8 Update from Wilsford Stables Ray's e mails, received this week, are detailed as follows; 23 June..

Hi guys,  You are all probably aware that Bud has not been declared for NA tomorrow for the reasons previously indicated. The winning memory lives on!
He will however, be entered for Worcester on 2 July in a 0-95 Novice handicap chase over 2 miles. He will have a good racing weight. Unfortunately, Marcus Foley has been banned until the middle of July, so Seamus will contact the agent for Jamie Moore at the entry stage, to see if he is available to ride.  I appreciate Worcester is quite a long distance away, but hopefully it will give members time to rearrange their diaries and save for the petrol!
I will keep you informed of developments.

19th June....Members enjoyed a good evening at Kempton yesterday. The result was as expected with Layla finishing at the back of the field, but the company and atmosphere was excellent.

Layla did not stay the distance and faded with two furlongs to go. Being out of a sprinter this is not surprising, but the feedback from the jockey unfortunately didn't give any encouragement that she had the speed to be competitive even over shorter distances. As a result she will be moved on and go to the next Ascot sales. She will not race again under our colours. Disappointing for all connected but at least we now know!

According to the trainer Buddy is bouncing at the moment . He has been entered for Newton Abbot's evening meeting on Tuesday in a novice chase. Not sure how competitive it will be, but I will keep you informed of developments.

NEWS UPDATE 8.6.2008, An ecstatic Ray reports BUD WINS AT 7/1

At Last!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hope you all managed to see yesterday's race at Worcester. Normally when I get to the races my confidence usually wavers a little, but on this occasion when Marcus Foley said in the parade ring that no one was going to make the running, I knew we had a chance and my confidence grew! For those who didn't see the race, Buddy was always in the front two and with 5 fences to go took it up and wasn't headed to the line.  Although a modest event, a win is a win but importantly he continues to improve. When you think that he was being tailed off in his races at the beginning of the season, the improvement has been gradual but remarkable.

Marcus Foley said the horse really enjoyed himself, with ears pricked and every time a horse came to him he could feel the horse wanting to pull away again (great news). Even when he made one or two minor errors over his fences he is learning to put himself straight. He did say that at the finish because the other horses were spread across the course, he idled a little, maybe if they had been closer, he could have pulled out more!!

Yours truly was quoted in the racing post. The piece said: " The smiles on the faces of the FIRG said it all as they finally welcomed back A SEA COMMANDER to the winners enclosure in their colours at the 20th time of asking.................Ray Hatchard said, "We have waited a long time for this as the trainer has been telling us for ages and we have kept faith and today was the day. It's time to savour the moment"

It was a fantastic day and although the race was a modest affair for the grade, Buddy is still learning and will improve with every run; how much nobody knows, but lets hope we will have many more of these days to come !   I will be e-mail you later on further news, especially re Layla and our bid for Kawagino. Regards Ray

NEWS UPDATE 31.5.8 A SEA COMMANDER RUNS THIS WEEK? Ray reports from Wilsford stables this week - Seamus is in Ireland at the moment looking for prospective super stars for the future! He informed me that both Buddy and Layla are well.

Buddy will be entered for Fontwell on Wednesday but his participation will be determined by the going and the number in the race (could be a hot race) . At the moment with all this rain it looks doubtful he will run and unless we have a dry and warm period from now on, we may have to wait until Saturday week (Derby day) when he will be entered for Worcester. I will keep you informed of developments.

Just to let you know we have made a bid for Kawagino and our offer has been put to the owner. Quite rightly he doesn't want to rush into a decision and needs to consider all his options. Fingers crossed he accepts, but our offer is only there until this weekend!

Ray

NEWS UPDATE 16.5.8 Update from Wilsford Stables Ray reported with plenty of news this week following A SEA COMMANDER's run at Wincanton and then at Fontwell. (Received 9.5.8) I have just spoken to Seamus and Buddy has come out of his race well. For those who haven't seen the result from last night, Buddy finished a fast finishing 4th at Wincanton, only beaten a nose for third place. It was nice to be in the winners enclosure again and not bad for a horse 9lb out of the handicap.

We had a new jockey on board, Marcus Foley so it was interesting to hear what he had to say after the race. As usual I always try to catch their reaction as soon as they come in from the course before they have had time to catch their breath.

He said Buddy travelled and jumped very well throughout the race. He got caught for toe about three out, but then finished like a train over the last. He thought he had caught the eventual third before the line and was annoyed he had not!  He said he definitely needs good/firm conditions and bounced off this ground. He also said he had loads of ability but needed either a stiffer 2 miles or a little further to be seen at his best. He said further that he has to be ridden a certain way as he hated other horses passing him, which urged him on....Seamus took on board what was said!   And this was his final comment..."He will definitely win for you"!

Seamus is adamant we should get him again quickly and as a result, Fontwell next week (Wed 14/5) is a strong possibility. He has been entered in two races there. I will, however, need to discuss with Seamus whether the figure of eight track will suit, but at the moment, put the date firmly in your diary.

There is some good news regarding
Layla.  (DELALYLA) She has been on the walker for two days and has not shown any sign of lameness. Therefore the Vet will inject the muscle and in the next week or so, she will be back in full training.
I will keep you informed of any further developments.

e mail received Tuesday evening read;
We have decided  to enter Buddy in the 2m 4f race at Fontwell rather than the beginners chase mainly because on the handicap mark he has definitely got a squeak, although we are taking a chance with the distance. Personally I would had rather run him over 2m 2f but with the firm conditions you never know!!

Buddy is in great form according to the trainer and believes he will run well. We did try to get Marcus Foley and Jamie Moore for jockey, mainly because they have done so well on him before, but one is at Exeter and other was already booked. However, I have every confidence that Wayne will do us proud!

Unfortunately, I will not be there because of work commitments, but Veronica will meet everyone in the bar as usual! Fingers crossed for a great afternoon. I shall be watching in the bookies!! In Ray's absence, John O kindly gave me a few lines regarding Wednesday's run at Fontwell - in the prize money again!

Generally - he ran reasonably well. However he is still prone to clout a couple of fences, he hit  four out particularly hard and without ever looking like he he is going to fall, he looses 0.5 length at most jumps to the better horses, and in the end this makes  the difference between coming 4th , instead of 3rd, or possibly second.

I think everybody agreed he needs good, good to firm ground, both Marcus Foley at Wincanton and Wayne yesterday said that he bounced off the firm ground.
Wayne thought that provided the ground was good to firm, that 2m6f might be his best distance, and Seamus was inclined to go along with that.

Re the other nags at home:

Sad news, YAWMI may not all be the man I was hoping for and may be firing blanks as neither of the mares have blood tested in foal (which I understand is about 90% accurate). However, I think this year we put it down to the inefficiencies of the stud master - me! and give him another bash next season. Obviously alot depends and how he runs, if he is still in training and if he's jumped a hurdle. plenty to discuss but all on hold until September time.

NEWS UPDATE  9 May  2008  A SEA COMMANDER RAN AT WINCANTON LAST NIGHT........ finishing in 4th place, in the prize money.

News and views from Ray EARLY this week .

Hi all, I nipped to the stable yesterday and spent some time with Seamus.  I mentioned my reservations and concerns with Buddy ( A SEA COMMANDER) and it was now make or break with him over the next month. Seamus is still adamant that we can win with him. He says, in hindsight we should not have run him at Plumpton, but he was hoping we could scrape in some prize money with the small field. He says we have to take into consideration that he had not worked well prior to the race, he would have needed the run badly having come back from having a bad cold and the ground conditions were atrocious. He accepts now that in view of the situation, everything must be in his favour before he runs next time to give him every chance to show us his true ability. I also talked about who should ride. Quite rightly he said we can have who we want, but felt that Wayne had not done anything wrong on him and always rode him when things were not 100% right!

It was decided however that we would put an entry into the Ascot Derby Sale on 3rd and 4th June, but in between give Buddy 2-3 quick races to give him every opportunity to show his ability Seamus thinks he has. If he does well the entry could then be scraped. Seamus feels with the ability he thinks Buddy has and his low handicap mark, he could rattle up a sequence of wins if we are lucky. It would be great if he is right...............but we will see! Buddy it is now up to you matey!

The good news is that Veronica rode him yesterday and he felt in good form. Seamus confirmed that he is now working well.  Providing there is not much rain this week and the going at Wincanton on Thursday is good or better, he will probably run in the Novice Handicap Chase, albeit out of the handicap. It is the first race on the evening card at 5.50pm. If all goes to plan he will then run again at Fontwell on 14 May.

Here are a few other dates for the diary: Newton Abbot on 19 May Fontwell on 25 May Huntingdon on 27 May

I saw Layla (DELAYLA) in her box; she looked well and finished off a packet of mints. On Tuesday she will be taken out and checked to see whether any lameness remains. If everything is OK, I understand the vet will then give her the cortisone injections and she can go back into training. The plan is to run her on the flat over 1m 2f +, although until she runs the distance is bit of an unknown with the sire being a sprinter, but the dam has a lot of stamina. Seamus is eying up a few maiden races at Kempton, Salisbury and Goodwood. I think Kempton is the favourite.

By the end of the month we will probably know the future of both our horses, so lets hope our luck changes and it is on the positive side. Notwithstanding what happens, we must now make contingency plans. Any thoughts or shed loads of money would be much appreciated!
News and views from Ray yesterday BEFORE last nights run:
Just to let you know that Buddy has been declared for Wincanton. There are 8 runners and Marcus Foley the 2nd jockey for Nicky Henderson will ride. He has already spoken to Jamie Moore who is at Newton Abbot about our guy!! Seamus says he will give him a positive ride and should be ideal. Fingers crossed for an improved performance!

LATEST NEWS on Other nags. All ok at home. TIMBERLAKE and AMBIENCE LADY both had the vet in this week because I've finally got my arse in gear and had their blood tests done to see if they are in foal or not. Blood has been sent away so I'll up date in due course, hopefully next week.

NEWS UPDATE  18 April 2008  Runners soon! News and views from Ray this week:

Just to let you know that Seamus has decided to enter both Buddy (A SEA COMMANDER) and Layla (DELAYLA) at Taunton on Friday 18/4 in a 2 mile Novice Chase and 2mile 1furlong NH Novice Hurdle respectively. The ground is ideal for Layla - good to firm at the moment.  I think both are speculative entries, especially Buddy as Seamus is hoping that as happened at Newbury yesterday, there are only 4 horses in the race ( only 2 finished)As for Layla I don't think she will get in her race and will be balloted out.I still think Plumpton on Monday 21/4 is the favourite, but I will keep you informed of developments.                              LATEST NEWS
Just to let you know that both Buddy and Layla do not run at Taunton Friday.

Could members let me know by Sunday lunch time whether you would like badges for Plumpton on Monday. Not so sure whether Layla will run, as I think the weather forecast is not so good over the next few days!! Will keep you informed.

Other nags are ok at home. TIMBERLAKE and AMBIENCE LADY both look in foal. In fact Ambience looks like she has a blinking string of foals inside her she is so big - she still has 10 months to go! I know I keep saying it but I must get off my backside and get them scanned.  Just to let you all know that I’ve jumped at the chance to ride YAWMI over  1 mile 5 furlongs at Newbury on Thursday 12th June in a Charity Race in aid of the Spinal Injuries Association. It will be a good opportunity to give him a blo, Emma says he will be fit enough to do himself justice (that’s the horse she was referring to, not me!) and the run will bring him on. Needless to say I am simply on a starvation diet to do about 11 stone! You are obviously all invited for a day out. A full card of races and then the big one - again, not me but the Charity Race!

NEWS UPDATE 11.4.8 Update from Wilsford Stables.         Ray reports with plenty of news this week;

I have spoken to Seamus today (6th April). Buddy's (A SEA COMMANDER) work has been increased. On Wednesday he was given a very good piece of work and although he did it well, blow hard afterwards. Seamus says he needs at least a further two good work outs and another school over fences before he is ready to run. He could be on the racecourse within the next 10 days. I will get back to you soon with a few dates for your diary.

Layla (DELAYLA) was a little stiff in her shoulders after her last run and has been having ultra sound to sort things out. On Wednesday she was schooled over hurdles again and according to the boss was very much better!! Seamus mentioned that the schooling ground by the gallops is always good or better, and feels that whilst she jumps fine on this type of ground, the soft slippery conditions at Wincanton un-nerved her and that's why she jumped so bad. That may be the answer whilst she jumps so much better at home!

We also made the decision that until she gets a lot more experienced, the stable jockeys will only ride her in her races. I will keep you up to date with her progress.

One piece of surprising stable news is that Richard Young is leaving the stable at the end of the month and going to work for Robert Alner in a non riding capacity. Not sure if it is promotion, but is more money and free accommodation, according to my sources.  He will be greatly missed and we all wish him well.

I am pleased to report both Jilly and Frank (GOLDEN CRUSADER) are still in one piece. I saw them go past the drive - looking the part (Frank, not you Jilly!) on the way up to the ménage for a dressage lesson! Tracey tells me she had a bit of a stumble, not tumble, on STERN this week but both are well and increasing their daily workload. As most of you are aware YAWMI is now back in training with Emma (full details on the caloona website 'latest news page'). Whisper (AMBIENCE LADY) and Bramble (TIMBERLAKE) are fine, eating for England and both appear full of beans. I will get them scanned this month to see if they are both in foal and will update this page accordingly with any news.

NEWS UPDATE  4 April 2008  Quake in Wilsford! (see bottom paragraph). News and views from Ray this week:

All I can say to you all concerning DELAYLA's run yesterday is schooling, schooling, schooling and more schooling!
I think you can say we were all disappointed with her short lived effort, but from the race and comments from the jockey afterwards, at least we have something to work on! One thing is for certain, which confirms Wayne's previous comments, is that she cannot handle soft ground whatsoever. That was the first thing the jockey said to me on his return.
I have had a chat with Seamus this morning. He was also very disappointed and assured me that she had been schooled four times last week and although she did not go well on Friday, worked well enough on Saturday. He apologises to members!
He spoke to the jockey last night. He confirmed that she was floundering on the ground and slipped into the first hurdle which unnerved her. Thereafter she was hesitant and had difficulty pulling her feet out of the ground when meeting a hurdle. He said, after meeting the fifth hurdle well (but had got herself behind) it was the time to pull her up, finishing on a good note!  The jockey told Seamus that she shouldn't be judged on this run as the conditions were all against her.
The plan is to school her extensively over hurdles and also pop her over fences. One thing is for certain she will not run again unless the ground is better than good. It's now over to you Seamus and I'm sure we will see a marked improvement next time!
Buddy (A SEA COMMANDER) is in good order, in fact so well he managed to unshipped Veronica a couple of times this morning. Veronica is fine but I can't say too much about the road!!! He will have a good workout tomorrow and Seamus will assess his condition. I think he will be out in the next couple of weeks. I will keep you informed!

Other nags are ok at home. TIMBERLAKE and AMBIENCE LADY have been moved to a new field following their romance with YAWMI. I will get them scanned in a few weeks time to see if they register in foal - fingers crossed. I'm sure as we speak Ambience is in but I'm not too sure whether Bramble took the bait!

NEWS UPDATE 28.3.8 Update from Wilsford Stables.         Ray reports;

Happy Easter gang!!  Right-click here to download pictures. To help protect your privacy, Outlook prevented automatic download of this picture from the Internet.Veronica and I left our warm comfy bed and nipped up to the stable early on Friday morning. Veronica had agreed to ride out a couple of lots and ended up doing three due to staff sickness! She rode Buddy, Layla and Bizy (Lets get Busy). I had the more difficult task of chatting with Seamus about a variety of racing subjects, together with discussing our horses. We even managed to have a couple cups of tea in between nipping up to the gallops........most taxing!  A SEA COMMANDER Bud looked well (shiny coat) and there was no visible sign of his snotty nose. He had two good canters up the gallop. Although he had been going up the gallops regularly, this was his first real good piece of work since his cold. Veronica said he moved up the gallops smoothly, but did have a good cough and splutter afterwards. This was ideal, as it would have cleared his airways and hopefully make him feel a lot better! I didn't appreciate how long a cold can last with a horse!! His work will be increased and by next weekend should be in fast work. Thereafter Seamus will start looking for races for him. He should be running in the next 2-3 weeks. DALAYLA Layla is a real sweety and enjoys a lot of attention in the stable. The good news is that she appears a lot fitter according to our stable jockey! Whereas it was difficult getting the girth done up on the the first hole prior to her last race, (a bit like me after Christmas) she is now on hole 3.  Layla had two good canters on the gallops working with an unraced gelding of Sally's. Veronica reckoned she could have taken him at any time......... competitive as usual! Veronica is quite taken by our new acquisition and whereas Layla, (not Veronica) was previously whizzy round the sand track a couple of weeks earlier, she appears to have relaxed a lot more and did a very good piece of road work prior to the gallops.  When you consider the strong wind, hail stones and rain, it shows what improvement she has made. Hopefully this will also pay dividends on the race course as she had always been quite keen in her races.     With all this wet weather Seamus has been loathed to run her, but as things appear to be a little drier, he is going to enter her in a maiden novice hurdle over 2 miles at Wincanton on Sunday 30th March.  Seamus wants to school her over hurdles on Wednesday and if all goes well, and she isn't balloted out, she will run.  Best wishes for a great Easter.
Latest news received today is:

Dalayla was schooled over hurdles yesterday and went very well. Everything is going to plan for Sunday. The weather forecast unfortunately, doesn't looked too good but providing it doesn't go to heavy she will probably take her chance. It is a watching brief, so keep your money in your wallet!!!!

Good news this week is I see Seamus thankfully broke his 'cold' spell with Hillsforts Timmy winning at Plumpton followed by another couple of seconds. Long may it continue and roll on the winning run into the weekend.                Other nags. YAWMI and the mares are being split up this weekend into separate paddocks. I think Whisper (AMBIENCE LADY) is definitely in foal but I'm not sure with Bramble (TIMBERLAKE). However, I will get them scanned during April but if either of them show in season in the meantime I'll soon pop him in with them to do the business. He's booked in for shoes on 2 April and will be starting roadwork from 3 April. Tracey has been steadily increasing work on STERN Tracey e mailed this week to say

Humph is getting fatter and has a snotty nose (got rays email; who hasn't??) but is doing ok. I did an hour and half hack yesterday, slow work and he was nodding a bit on way home, I wasn't sure he was lame, it seemed more like he just wanted a long rein and then he was fine-not sure if he's just having me on now! Leg looks ok and isn't hot, so will ride a good hour+ tomorrow and see how he is then!

I haven't seen or heard (which is unusual) from Jilly next door and I assume all is still going well with Frank GOLDEN CRUSADER. I hope so anyway because sooner or later I'll be looking for a lead out to the forest. Also had some good news this week from Jan Duke regarding their filly Miss Judgement. it read.

Well, she finally popped ! Due on March 10th but held on until Sunday 23rd March.  We had a worry on Good Friday as we were told that she was causing a bit of concern as she had been bagged up and waxing for a few days but did not seem to be doing anything and was looking a little flat.  Decided to go an see her on the Saturday and had a bit of a chat with her to tell her to get on with it.  Expected a phone call the next morning to say that she had taken my advice but nothing. However, on the Sunday evening we had the call we had been hoping for. MJ had foaled at 8.10pm (very civilised)  she had been out in the paddock during the day to see if they could get her moving and it did the trick (I think she wanted to get back to her nice warm bed !)  When they brought her back in late afternoon she decided to knuckle down and do something.  After one false start she went into hard labour about 6pm and had ‘Sid’ in about 2 hours. ‘Sid’ apparently is a character on some program or another called Iceman?  As the sire is Iceman that is what he is called for now.   MJ should be off to Ireland in a few days once the foal is strong enough to visit Clodovil who won the French 2,000 Guineas.

NEWS UPDATE 18.1.08 A Sea Commander Unships Wayne!
The official update from Hatch reads as follows:

Sorry for the delay in writing the report but didn't get back to late on Thursday evening and was up at 4.30am on Friday to go to London for a meeting.
Firstly, Buddy came out of his race OK and besides a small graze is fit to fight another day. Hereford on Thursday was a bog......and that was only the car park!! We were hoping that Hereford would miss some of the rain, but I knew as soon as we arrived the conditions would be difficult and watching the early races it was confirmed, as  most of the horses finished very tired. Not what we really wanted, but it was the same for all of the horses, so we decided to take our chance. Seamus believes that no horse likes these conditions, but some act better in it than others!
For those who have not seen the race, Buddy led at the start and after a few fences he and the eventual winner had most of the other horses off the bridle. It was only coming to the 8th fence when the other horse jumped slightly in front of him that Bud changed his mind at the last moment from jumping a long to a short, which resulted in him brushing the top of the fence hard and unseating Wayne.
Both Jockey and trainer thought we wouldn't have beaten the easy winner, but felt Bud would have finished at least second. Only five horses finished and, other than the winner, they all finished very tired.  Jump racing is a frustrating sport, but as we know jumping is the name of the game!
More importantly though, both horse and jockey returned home safely! I still do not think the conditions suited Buddy and hopefully next time the ground will be a lot better. At least we can be a lot more positive for the future and both Seamus and I feel that we will have some good fun with him!

Latest news from Hatch is ;Just spoken to Seamus and in view of the wet weather we have decided against Folkestone (Tuesday). It will be a bog. The same will also apply to Chepstow (Friday), so back to the drawing board!

However, I see today (Thursday) that he is entered for two races at Towcester on Sunday. I'm sure Ray will e mail Members in due course.

A SEA COMMANDER powers home

NEWS UPDATE 4.1.08 A Sea Commander 3rd! Following an encouraging run, an extremely excited Ray e mailed this week;

Hi All,.....At last the penny has started to drop!!! As most of you are no doubt aware Buddy finished 3rd of 14 at Taunton yesterday. With a new jockey on board, Jamie Moore followed Seamus' orders to the tee and kept him in the first two right from the start. It was only at the second last fence when the leader fell and Buddy found himself in front, that his inexperience showed again and he allowed two horses to pass him. It was only when the the fourth horse tried to pass him on the run in that he started to run on again to the line.

This was a vast improvement on his last run and some of the credit must go to Richard Young who in his last run at Chepstow gave him a hard time and made sure he got home. This appears to have taught him a lot!

Jamie Moore was a little surprised at members joy when he came back into the winners enclosure, as from our reaction you would have thought he had won the race. In our minds he had in some way!  He said Buddy jumped well, was very genuine and never gave him any indication he was about to stop. If given the ride again he said that he would hold him up a little to reserve something for the finish. He feels we will definitely win with him!

Speaking to Seamus today, he reported that Buddy came out of the race well and ate up well on his return to the stable. He is over the moon with his improvement and believes there is still a lot more there, as he still has a lot to learn. He's just pleased that some of his ability he shows at home is being transferred to the racecourse.

After talking to Jamie again this morning, Seamus feels that Buddy could be dropped back to two miles or alternatively, upped to 2.5 miles on a flat course. Whatever, he should be out again in the next 3 weeks.  Although he has taken note of Jamie's comments about holding him up next time, he will be ridden near the front again until Seamus feels he has learnt a lot more!

Speaking to Wayne in the racecourse bar after the race, he was gutted to have missed the opportunity to ride. He said he knew sooner or later he would start to run well and had told Jamie this earlier. As usual I will keep you all informed of any news.

Treated the other nags to some new rugs for Christmas and they all looked very special until day 2 when they duly decided to roll in the welcoming mud. Hence, the red and green coloured coats are now more black and brown but at least they keep them warm and dry. YAWMI continues to enjoy his winter off, I haven't told him yet that we have in mind the 2009 Champion Hurdle for him! Jilly tells me that  GOLDEN CRUSADER (Frank) has had the vet in as it appears - at this stage - that he has some sinus trouble. However, I don't know all the 'ins and outs' but he's going to Liphook, Hampshire to have an investigative x ray?(maybe a scan?) on his head. As soon as I see Jilly I'll get an update. She's been in the wars again, kicked on her bum the week before Christmas and damaged a finger last week. I think we must be mad riding out with her! Tracey tells me STERN is beginning to settle into his new surroundings. I received an e mail from her this week which read " Humphrey has settled down and I am walking him out-he is very strong and really marches out-my little legs wont keep up with him!! 6 weeks walking out and then I hope to get him scanned again-see if I can get on!!! love him!!". All sounds good. Work off some of those Christmas pounds (lbs) Keeping!

NEWS UPDATE  1 November 2007  New arrival for Keeping!

Woa, hold on Gary it's not what you think, it's a horse! Yes, Keeping has volunteered a good home for life for one of Emma's racers who has fallen out of love with the racing game. A winner over fences and fit and ready to go in all spheres, NO WAY BACK - a 7 year old 16.2 hh bay gelding , joins Tracey within the next few weeks. 16.2 hh Keeping, blimey that's along way down! Company for Yawmi , I hope, for a couple of months - may have to get his shoes back on and a saddle on him sooner than we thought! Pleased to report that Whisper (Ambience Lady) is still talking hold of the bit. Showing a clean pair of heels to Bramble (Timberlake) and me over the grass gallop this week, mind you Brazier you did have a 5 length start and a 4 stone weight advantage. D'you know the meaning of the term, 'A steady canter!' Brazier?

News on BUD (A SEA COMMANDER) this week from Ray is;

Just to let you know that Buddy had a canter on Monday and again today (Wednesday). Seamus says that (touch wood) his leg appears fine, but just to be on the cautious side, he will get the vet to have a quick look at him when he does his stable visit on Friday. If all is OK,  he will be entered for races thereafter. I will keep you informed on any further news.

YAWMI - THE TALKING HORSE

NEWS UPDATE  18 October  2007  Bud news...... Ray, off the crutches, and fully back to the roving reporter role said this week

I expect most of you would have seen Buddy's (A SEA COMMANDER) race or read the report. There has been a mixed response by members. Some felt there was not much change but others were very much more encouraged. Everyone at least agreed, however, that Buddy jumped very well.  I have spoken to Seamus and Wayne Kavanagh since the race and asked for their un-bullsh** version! These are some of their comments: They knew Buddy would not stay 3 miles, but felt for an introduction it was better to go that little bit slower to the fences and gain confidence than run in a quick 2m or 2m 4f race and possibly make mistakes.

On the previous Tuesday, Buddy partnered Jockser and Pan the Man, on the grass gallops had them off the bridle all the way. Both S & W believe he definitely has the speed for two miles but not 3 miles.
The next day he schooled over fences with W and was mustard (Seamus's words) - confirmed on the race course.
Their race comments of which they both agree were as follows:
They said he jumped superbly and didn't put a foot wrong. He was different horse than when he ran over hurdles, he enjoyed it and without any encouragement put himself in contention numerous times with his jumping. At the top of the hill, second time round, he did blow up (tired), whether it was lack of fitness or a combination of this, tiredness and the fact he didn't stay, was the reason why Wayne decided to take it very easy with him.  The reason he pulled him up was as in the past when he gets on his own, he loses concentration and also gets nervous - quirky bugg**! Wayne felt he would have been in the first five if he had been fit, notwithstanding that he didn't stay.
I told Seamus that I was encouraged by the run, especially with his jumping and the fact he appeared to enjoy the experience, but I told him that we now needed to see him keep in contention for the whole of the race and at least finish much closer up to the finishing line.  We are in agreement that he doesn't stay 3 miles and next time when he runs over a shorter distance, there should not be a reason for him to fade.

The feeling from Seamus is genuinely very positive and he says there is no reason why Buddy cannot win a race over the right distance........careful Alan, stop laughing! Seamus is going to give me a few races to consider in the next few days. In view of his good jumping he is not frightened to go to any course with him now. He should run in the next two to three weeks.  I will keep you informed.

Other news ......... Winter coats are beginning to grow on the two mares. We are scheduled in to tackle our gallop with a three year old filly from Mick Channon's yard on Saturday. That'll be a sharp buzz  I think, whether we like it or not. The mares will not have been out for a fortnight so I'm sure they will be up for it. We haven't seen Frank (Golden Crusader) for a couple of weeks as he's been busy with his schooling educational lessons. I understand from Jilly that all is going well and he's up for some dressage competitions later on in the year. That will be like trying to steer a tanker in the bath Jilly! Good luck with the old boy, he does you proud. Yawmi is no longer foot sore. Far from it, in fact I think he will soon be the fittest nag in the field. He's very alert, always on the move and very very sharp. We intend to give him the winter off - normal Attwater way, pump him full of grub and introduce him to the mares at the end of January to see if he is interested in becoming a Dad! Then who knows, we'll stick his shoes back on, give him some work round the roads and on the open forest and may stick him back in training in a dual purpose yard - hopefully with his nuts still in tact!

NEWS UPDATE 5.10.077 All 'HOPE's Gone!

.... Sadly Gowna's Hope was sold at Ascot sales on Tuesday to S.Rawlinson for £1,200. Not sure what the plans are for him now, Ray may have more details in due course. Would be nice to keep an eye out for him. I think the jury's out on what to do with the funds and a lot depends upon how Bud (SEA COMMANDER) progresses and performs over the next few weeks. Ray will contact all owners direct re what the future may hold.

Timberlake and Ambience Lady are both scheduled for another cross country schooling session on Saturday morning. Both have been working very well at home with the former showing the latter a clean pair of heels despite carrying extra weight, in excess of four stone, yes that is STONE not pounds! Message for Seamus and Emma: I've had another request from the yard next door for another Frank or Patoma if either of you hear of anything available, looking for a good home for life. I think I actually saw a grown horse smile this week as  Yawmi saw Tracey unloading his new rug from the boot of her car. Poor old bugger, he's still not had it on yet as although wet, the nights are quite mild and he's doing very well without it. The ladies went out with Golden Crusader (Frank) again last weekend. I think the reason why he is so chilled and generally just turned off is because Jilly has bored him silly! How can a woman talk like that, she simply doesn't take a breath and you can't get a word in edgeways! Frank has become a nagged husband. She talks away to him as if he is another person out on the ride. She speaks for him as well! Truly a match made in heaven. You've landed on your feet there Frank. ps Sorry in advance, no update next week.

NEWS UPDATE 21.9.7  A date with the Commander?

Well it's not Sunday at Plumpton!. Hatch tells me this morning that Seamus is looking for the right race for Bud over the next couple of weeks. All things are good with him at home and he continues to school well.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS RACING GROUP

Pleased to report that Ambience Lady and Timberlake continue to behave out in the forest and now they know where they are going, are doing (intentionally) a lot faster work. We are taking them to a cross country course on Saturday morning to see how they school. Just remember Trace, to the best of my knowledge Timberlake hasn't jumped anything as big as a chase fence (and I've only ever jumped the garden gate, on my own!) so let's not start now! Pleased to report that Kevin Watson came down last Saturday morning to see Frank. I think he was chuffed to bits to see the old boy in his new surroundings and was surprised how chilled he was. Gilly has done a great job with him and I think on Saturday he was due to have his first schooling session! She's a big fan of this Pirelli training method - I thought they only made car tyres but Kevin is a big fan too and knew all about it. The three million dollar man man! well the three million guineas horse in this case, YAWMI, (pictured left) has settled in very well. The farrier has been back this week to give him the once over and can't believe how much foot growth there has been in the matter of weeks he's been with us. All good news and at least he will have a decent foot to put shoes back on in the spring.

NEWS UPDATE  31 August 2007

From our hobbling roving reporter ...

It reads: I managed to hobble up to Wilsford Stable on Saturday and see young Bud (A SEA COMMANDER) do a good piece of work up the gallops. My trusty nurse (Veronica) was the rider and said he felt as strong as ever. The news from the stable is that Bud should be ready to run by the second part of September and in the next week or two I will be giving you some possible race dates for your diary.

Good news Hatch and it will be great to have another runner shortly. Pleased to report that Ambience Lady and Timberlake continue to behave out in the forest. We went out and had a so called steady one mile canter last week, albeit not exactly in a straight line and causing two stampedes en route. Tracey needs to get some decent glasses as when I shout "Head towards that tree in the distance", she seems to instinctively take a different course - always off to the left! Whose in charge of that nag Keeping? Tracey is taking Ambience Lady to a couple of hunter trials within the next couple of months so if anybody wants a day out to give their support then I will advise details in due course on this site. We made a new purchase this week, called YAWMI and full details are on the Caloona Racing page.

NEWS UPDATE  23 August 2007

RED ARROWS MAKE THEIR "UNWELCOME" PRESENCE FELT!

I know I've been off for a couple of weeks but to be greeted with a Red Arrows fly past when I'm just coming into land at Bournemouth airport was not the most pleasant of experiences.  I think it's well documented that I am not the best of fliers and looking out of a poxy round window whilst being rocked and rolled around in a plane, fast approaching a cloud covered airport, was not the best time to be buzzed by Top Guns 'Iceman' and 'Goose'. They were that bloody close they could have seen my flying name written on my helmet, 'Brickin It'. Lucky for them they were leaving Bournemouth else I'd have launched a few verbal missiles when we finally landed following my rapid trip to the bog! Anyway, back to the nags, received an email from Ray this week, no longer referred to as our roving reporter because he's stuck at home on crutches! It read:

I've had a long chat with Seamus and we have decided to pull Gowna's Hope out of training and send him off to the sales in October. We have given him every opportunity to show his home ability on the racecourse and now feel that we have no alternative but to part company. It is very disappointing as his home work is excellent, but doesn't mean a hoot if they don't show it on the racecourse. If you know of anyone who is interested in buying a racehorse........well nearly a racehorse, let me know. Seamus says he will make a good point to point horse.
Buddy (A Sea Commander) had his first full canter since his return from the paddock. Seamus still has faith in the lad. He believes he has ability but is very immature and backward. He is hoping that by jumping fences it will be the making of him and as a result he grows up quickly. As you know, at home he jumps very well. The plan is to give him 2-3 races very quickly to see how he does. If he shows some ability, well fine, but if not, we will be parting company as well. Seamus feels that if we have to sell him, he will make an excellent point to point horse, so his sale will be aimed in this arena and will be sold during the latter part of October. A clear round in his races will enhance his value in this connection.
If both horses are sold, my suggestion is to combine both pots of monies, and any other contributions people would like to make, and then buy something else for members to enjoy. Seamus is, of course, hoping that Buddy surprises everyone, but needless to say he has already indicated he has a "Cheltenham" horse waiting for us in the wings, if necessary!!!

Other news......... BBQ SUCCESS A big thanks to everybody who showed up last Sunday and especially those who helped out, fantastic job well done. I must admit that I was amazed the 3 colts behaved so well. I think it was because Tracey and Kim, who had been grooming and talking to them for most of the morning, sent them to sleep! Very pleased to report that following on from the 'Open Day' we picked up five new shareholders. Great and many thanks, you know who you are, so welcome on board. Ok the sun didn't blaze and shine but thankfully the rain held off too. Timberlake, Ambience Lady and Golden Crusader are seeing plenty of each other lately. Regular trips onto the open forest are going well and all bodes well for Team Chasing next season! You must be bloody joking. Looking forward to seeing  some of you at Emma's on Sunday.

NEWS UPDATE  26 July  2007

BBQ INVITES IN THE POST ....

YES, they've gone (FIRST CLASS) but with the postal strike action due over the next couple of weeks you may not get them this week end. I know I've been bleating on about it for a while but once you get your invite, all we are looking for is confirmation of numbers in order that we are able to cater accordingly. Thanks in anticipation. That's if I'm still alive because on Saturday (weather permitting) we are off to follow Frank (Golden Crusader) for a steady canter over a two mile disused railway track. Does Frank know the meaning of the word 'steady canter'? Thankfully I should be carrying at least 4 stone more on Timberlake than Frank (with Gilly on board) and Ambience Lady (with Tracey on board). There is a theory that providing we stay on we will all be safe because neither Frank or Timberlake ever seemed to go much further than two miles!

Surprisingly no racing last weekend for GOWNAS HOPE, especially as he was entered at Stratford! Have you seen the news lately to see the racecourse completely submerged?

I'm afraid there will be no update for the next couple of weeks as I'm away on holiday.

NEWS UPDATE  12 July  2007

WET GROUND HINDERS OUTINGS....

I've had an e mail this week from our roving reporter, Mr Hatchard, fresh back from the Algarve and it reads: I spoke to Seamus this morning. With hardly any jump racing at the moment he reports all is very quiet at the stables.

Hope is fit and well and just waiting for the drier ground. He has been entered in a "Seller" at Newton Abbot on Monday in 3.15 race. His participation will depend on the going and his ballot number. Seamus and I have agreed that should he disappoint again over hurdles we will consider giving him a run or two on the flat. He is flat bred and I'm not a hundred percent sure whether he stays well enough over hurdles. A race of over 7f to a mile at Kempton or Lingfield may be worth a try.

Buddy's leg is healing well. We have decided to give him a two week break in the paddock and then bring him back at the beginning of August for a couple of races over the big fences. He may not race until the end of August/beginning of September.  I will keep you informed of any further news on both horses.

Other news......... THE EARTH MOVES!

Did the earth move for you all at about 7.30 last Monday evening? I ask because there was one hell of a rumble as I hit the ground with a thud (well, more of a wet squelch) whilst out running wild in the forest on Timberlake ( affectionately known as Bramble, and other names after this episode.) However, I blame Keeping who was riding Ambience Lady (Whisper) as she always leads but upon reaching open land, that seemed to stretch for miles, she promptly reined in giving the feeble excuse that Whisper was bucking! My version of events are that I reluctantly found myself in front to suddenly realise that sitting up round a horses neck with your bum in the air isn't quit as plain sailing as it is on a straight set of gallops. Uneven terrain, dogs and joggers appearing from nowhere, rabbit holes and water filled trenches tended to cause Bramble to stray from the straight line that I had in mind. Arriving flat out (Tracey said it was nothing more than a steady canter, how would she know she was so far behind?)  at a water filled cavern/gorge (Tracey said it was more like a puddle without enough water in it for a duck to wash it's hair in!) Bramble was undecided whether to jump it or run either side of it. As she started to duck and dive it was bloody well apparent from sitting on top that she had no intention of taking the simple and sensible option of running through it. I thought she was going to stop as she applied the brakes, thinking she would stay straight I looked forward with head held high, next minute I realised I was still looking and going forward but on my own, she had turned left!. Now Tracey said it all seemed to happen in slow motion because as my arse went through the air she said for a while it blocked out the sun, a partial eclipse! I maintain that's rubbish Keeping as you were still too far behind! Never mind, no harm done and we live to fight another day. out in the forest again on Saturday morning so watch this space.
